Your Cover's Blown

Okay so it's been a while since I've contributed to the Mondo blog and I was thinking, as Summer winds down, it'd be natural to do a posting on this season's soundtrack. But the truth is the lot of you have probably already hunted down the newest in Electrelane, Shout Out Louds, Blonde Redhead and the like.

So in the spirit of keeping the material interesting, I've opted to post a tribute to "the tribute". You know those tracks we love that some band has came along and made their own? Here are some interesting (and obscure) selects:

Laisse Tomber Les Filles - An incredible French pop number originally written by the notorious Serge Gainsbourg for 60's chanteuse France Gall. It was virtually impossible to top the level of perfection of the original, but April March's campy surfer girl take--titled "Chick Habit"--manages to morph this tune into something altogether different.

Frontwards - A much beloved tune for many a child of my generation, Pavement's Frontwards is a classic 90's guitar piece. Flash forward to 2007, it's been brilliantly shaken, stirred and re-recorded by Los Campesinos. This cover gets the gold star!

Gigantic- This well-known track by the infamous Pixies was one of the most memorable tracks off their 1988 Surfer Rosa LP. A slower, more moody take on this track appeared in 1993 by the dream-pop band Orange, on THURTENE (A tribute to 4AD) compilation album .

Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror: New Enon!

This Friday, Enon mastermind/ mad scientist John Schmersal guest DJs with us at Mondo. If I could encapsulate the sound of our excitement about having him this week, it would sound something like the super hooky two-minute freakout "Mirror On You" from Enon's forthcoming Grass Geysers and Carbon Clouds.

For more on Enon, check out http://www.myspace.com/enonmusic

And check out the main page for all the details on this week's Mondo.
